Rarity and Supply Constraints
Platinum is approximately 30 times rarer than gold in the earth's crust. Annual mine production hovers around 6 million troy ounces — compared to roughly 100 million ounces of gold and 800 million ounces of silver. Over 70% of global platinum production comes from South Africa, with Russia contributing around 12%. This geographic concentration creates supply vulnerability that does not exist with gold or silver mining, which is distributed across dozens of countries.
The U.S. Geological Survey classifies platinum group metals as critical minerals due to supply concentration and industrial importance. Any disruption to South African mining — labour strikes, power grid instability, regulatory changes — immediately constrains global supply.
